2020 has been referred to as the year of the Great Racial Awakening (amongst many other things lol.) This song plays on a metaphor of being asleep and awake (something many of us felt during 2020) and is an expression of my cautious optimism that things will actually change. It's also a reminder that regardless of what happens, the strength and power in our melanin that has passed on through generations will persist and see us through.
